Interested in a career in construction?

Join free pre-employment training to prepare you for upcoming construction jobs in Canada Water – starting 14 October.

The Southwark Construction Skills Centre is now enrolling for its first two-week Pre-Employment Programme, which is designed to help inspire people looking to start a career in construction and provide local residents with the basic training and requirements for getting on site. The centre is actively working with our construction contractors to provide training to prepare candidates for new construction jobs that they have started recruiting for now that construction of the first buildings of the development is starting.

About the courses:
The programme will arm you with the skills required to access jobs in the construction industry, including the current vacancies with Mace Group on the Canada Water development. Participants will gain Level 1 certifications covering health and safety (including a CSCS card), as well as basic construction and digital skills. It is open to anyone aged 16 and over, who are a resident in the borough and who are currently unemployed or earning less than £16k per annum.
The free, two-week course uses a mix of classroom-based and onsite training. It is also a gateway to other courses at the centre, which provide further qualification training and job prospects. The next start dates are:

  • Thursday 14th October 2021
  • Thursday 28th October 2021
  • Thursday 11th November 2021
  • Thursday 18th November 2021

We expect the Canada Water development to generate around 1,000 construction jobs and apprenticeships over the coming 10-15 years and we are focussed on ensuring that local people can access these opportunities. This is why we have teamed up with SCSC and are working with our supply chain to provide jobs.

Our contractor Mace Group is currently recruiting for six vacancies as part of the Canada Water development. The full job descriptions are available on our website www.canadawatermasterplan.com/jobs-and-training and site noticeboards from next week. The Skills Centre will act as a hub for information, training and advice for SE16 residents interested in construction. Find out more about the centre at https://theskillscentre.co.uk/.
