Eighteen jobseekers from across Southwark have gained vital insights to help progress their careers, following a two-week employment support programme based on the opportunities offered by the Canada Water development.

The initiative, run as a collaboration between Canada Water Connect and recruitment agency The Launch Group, gave participants an overview of the construction industry and offered guidance in how to navigate the various opportunities available in Canada Water.

Through workshops on mental resilience, conflict management and equality and diversity, attendees developed skills that are vital for any role in the modern jobs market. Sessions on how to present a CV and approach a job interview, manage finances, and set up in self-employment added practical know-how aimed at helping candidates secure the jobs they want.

The course also included a visit to the Plot A1 site, where we’re building new homes at The Founding, alongside workspace, shops and restaurants in Three Deal Porters. Several sub-contractors gave presentations on their roles in building the development, sharing their own experiences of how they chose their career paths. They offered advice on what jobseekers need to do to progress in various trades and answered attendees’ questions.

Course participant Ibrahim said: “This course has really helped me build my confidence and better understand construction. I really want to get into drylining [fitting plasterboard to internal walls and ceilings to provide a smooth finish] and I’m so happy I’m getting an interview as a result of attending this.”

Macey, another candidate on the course, added: “I was pleased I joined [this course]. It was nice to meet new people and I had my CV given to one of the contractors on only my second day, which I really wasn’t expecting. I’m now looking forward to speaking with them about an electrical mate vacancy.”
