Putting down roots in Canada Water

British Land and Southwark Council are delighted to announce the commencement of tree planting as part of the Canada Water Masterplan – with the planting of 48 new trees in Rotherhithe, Surrey Docks and North Bermondsey Wards.  This forms part of British Land’s commitment to plant  c.1,200 new trees as part of the Canada Water Masterplan project.  
 
The Masterplan Tree Planting Strategy is focused on the ‘right tree, right place’, planting medium and large trees where possible to deliver improvements to the local biodiversity, habitat creation and to create seasonal interest.  British Land will continue to talk to local stakeholders about where additional trees could be planted in the 3 Wards.
 
Councillor Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, Planning and Transport, said:
“In Southwark we are busy fulfilling our commitment to plant 10,000 new trees, to add to the 82,000 already in our care. We understand the value of trees in creating homes for wildlife, protecting against flooding, filtering our air and adding nature, life and beauty to local neighbourhoods. We welcome the contribution that British Land’s 1,250 trees will make to our bold, new tree planting plans for Southwark.”

“The Canada Water Masterplan is striving for the highest environmental standards and we are delighted to be planting so many new trees in the local area so early in the delivery of the Project.  We are also planning to plant more trees in the next planting season.
