Our Commitment to Providing Jobs and Training Opportunities

We want to get local people – those living nearest to the masterplan area and in wider Southwark – into meaningful, sustained employment as part of the Masterplan.

We expect over a thousand construction jobs including apprenticeships, to be generated by the development throughout the 15 years, and upon completion, we anticipate that there will be around c.20,000 people working in the new offices, retail and operations of the new town centre.

Our plan to get local people into work starts with the opportunities generated by the construction, so over the next year:

We are working with our supply chain – the construction contractors and their sub-contractors – to identify and promote these opportunities, including apprenticeships and delivering pre-employment training linked to specific opportunities. Our current contractors include Mace Group, Galldris, Keltbray and Wates.

  • All of our contractors are required to develop a plan outlining how they will recruit and support local residents into the roles created
  • We anticipate a range of opportunities becoming available across different project elements and skill levels and including labouring, skilled trades and office based.
  • We expect to share more information on the roles and training opportunities over the coming months as the main contractors start on site.

Progress to so far:

  • We have been underway with our preparatory works, getting the site ready ahead of the construction of the first buildings and spaces. We also recently finished internal and external restoration works to the Grade II listed former Dock Offices, which will provide a new office for the British Land team.
  • We are now starting the construction of the first buildings on site. If there are any live opportunities from these contracts, you will be able to find them below. You can also go to their websites directly to register for opportunities.
  • We have already established a partnership with Construction Youth Trust and the Southwark Construction Skills Centre to help local people get the skills and knowledge to get on site – for contact details see below.

All phase 1 construction jobs are paid at least London Living Wage.
